Big Local picks up the pace

You may know that the villages of Ansley, New Arley and Old Arley have been given £1 million of lottery money to spend on local projects over the next ten years, under a scheme known as Big Local. There is one condition – we the residents have to say what we want it to be spent on.

To get an idea of how we would like it to be spent, a steering group of local volunteers have put together a questionnaire, called ‘Who wants to be a Leys Millionaire?’ Everyone who completes it can choose to have their name entered into a prize draw for £100 of vouchers to be spent in local shops. Over the summer we will be knocking on doors or setting up a stall outside village shops, where you can take part. We will also be planning events over the summer where you can have your say, including an inter-village Bake-Off, a Scarecrow Festival, and more …

The steering group is looking for more members. Have you a suggestion for a village event? Have you an idea for how the money can be spent? Have you an idea for how to solve our traffic/transport problems? Can you put up posters? If the answer is yes to any of these and you would like to take part, please send an email to or phone our new community worker, Adam Farrell on 01827 718080. The group meets on the first Monday of the month, in one of the three villages in turn.

Adam has been employed for two days a week for six months over the summer to help get the project off the ground. As well as the phone number, you can contact him by email on Or you might see him around the villages, with his Leys Millionaires name badge.

The project has a Community Chest, a pot of £4000 to help launch local initiatives. Would you like to set up a childminding service? Or grasscutting? Or a Leys newsletter? Adam is the person to talk it through with, for access to funds and expert advice.

To get involved contact Adam our Big Local Community Worker or ring 01827 718080 or contact Gill our Big Local rep on or ring 0786 757 6633. We have an email address if you want to write to us. We also have a facebook page so please log in to and like our page.

Remember it is the residents of Arley and Ansley who decide how the £1M will be spent so
